About the TransMedRi Biobank

The TransMedRi Biobank was established in 2011 as the first national biobanking hub in the Republic of Croatia. It represents the essential facility for translational research aimed to collect, identify and define the nature and origin of bio-samples for clinical studies. Research on biobank's samples has to be performed in two ways: (1) research into sample handling and storage to optimize sample quality, and (2) research using biobank samples to identify and validate new targets and biomarkers.
The TransMedRi Biobank was funded in the frame of the project EU FP7 (FP7-REGPOT-2010-5) named Upgrading the capacities for Research in Translational Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine University of Rijeka (Project Acronym: TransMedRi) (http://transmedri.uniri.hr). The project aimed to improve dissemination of scientific research and results across the EU, raised the competitiveness of research in the region and contributed to the development of the European Research Area. One of the achieved goals was to integrate the TransMedRi Biobank in the European network of Bio-banks (PATB network,  http://www.impactsnetwork.eu).

The Department of Pathology, Medical Faculty, University of Rijeka (Braće Branchetta 20, Rijeka) under the leadership of Professor Nives Jonjić, MD, PhD, is the founder of the TransMedRi Biobank in collaboration with Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka (Krešimirova 42, Rijeka). The TransMedRi Biobank, as public non-profit organization is an institutional research infrastructure of the Medical Faculty, University of Rijeka housing human biological samples, including fresh frozen tissues, blood, urine, saliva, tooth, bone, plaque, formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissues, associated with clinical data as well.
